So You Think You Can Dance?...Then Try Out for 'Step Up 2'

One of my absolute favorite shows is So You Think You Can Dance, the reality show where they search for America's favorite dancer. This is also the show that Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan appeared on last summer to promote the release of 'Step Up'.

The casting director for 'Step Up 2' released the casting call below to get actors/dancers to try out for all of the principal roles in the movie. We know for sure now that the movie is going with a completely new storyline, but from what I see so far, it looks interesting. As I previously posted on the blog, 'Step Up 2' will start filming very soon with Robert Hoffman playing the lead.

The really cool thing is that the casting call describes the current storyline for the movie and the main characters. Here is the casting announcement and storyline summary for 'Step Up 2':

[ANDIE] Female, any ethnicity, 18-25 years old. Andie is bursting at the seams with potential of being the best Bgirl in town. She ís young, determined and has plenty of personality to spare. While she may act tough and confident, deep down she is a lost soul as she tries to find her place in the world. Andie may know all the fancy tricks, and the flashy moves to win dance battles but what she soon discovers is she needs to know herself and deal with the inner demons that hold her back before she can truly be a great dancer. When she is accepted to the highly reputable performing arts high school, MSA, she discovers not only herself but also who her true friends and family are and what it takes to keep them. MUST BE AN ACCOMPLISHED DANCER LEAD

[MOOSE] Male, Caucasian, 18-25 years old. Attends MSA, and immediately befriends Andie.
Think a skater version of Anthony Michael Hall from Sixteen Candles. Funny, a little awkward, but loyal to the brim, Moose will probably be the CEO of some giant computer company one day, but for now, he ís the guy girls love but never date. Although most assume he ís at MSA to study lighting design, he is actually an unbelievable dancer because of his childhood infatuation with Michael Jackson. He surprises everyone and becomes the secret weapon of the MSA dance team that hopes to compete in the underground dance battle called The Streets. MUST BE AN ACCOMPLISHED DANCER LEAD

[SOPHIE DONOVAN] Female, Caucasian, 18-25 years old. She attends MSA and is the ULTIMATE female dancer. She's been training for years in all forms of dance (Jazz, Ballet, Tap, Hip Hop, Lyrical, etc) and she is killer in all of them. She is extremely focused, extremely ambitious and doesn't have many friends because of it. She's not mean, she just doesn't have time for it and people are intimidated (think Sandra Oh's character from Grey's Anatomy). The one person she did date a couple years back was Patrick (Robert Hoffman) so she gets particularly jealous when Andie comes into the picture. However, in the end she learns to let go and eventually respects Andie. MUST BE AN ACCOMPLISHED DANCER SUPPORTING

[TUCK] Male, African-American, 23 years old. He is the leader of the 410 underground dance team and the organizer of The Streets competition. MUST BE AN ACCOMPLISHED DANCER SUPPORTING

[DJ SAND] Male, any ethnicity, 20-25 years old. Spins for the local club, Dragon and is in charge of making the battles more interesting by adding props such as trampolines, or treadmills. In the end, it is Sand (aka Sandman) that goes against the status quo and helps get the MSA team a chance to perform. SUPPORTING

[BLAKE] Male, Caucasian, 25-30 years old. Patrick's older brother, he was the star dancer at MSA when he attended years ago and has since gone off to be a very successful Hollywood choreographer. The students are in awe of him and the mothers are in love with him.
He's come back to teach a master class for one year at his alma mater, but sparks fly when Patrick starts to feel overshadowed by his brother like he has his whole life. Must have dance ability. SUPPORTING

[DIRECTOR CYNTHIA MANNING] Female, any ethnicity, 30-40 years old. She is the new Creative Director at MSA. She is pushing the highly successful school into the next level by spearheading the multimillion-dollar expansion out of the city and recruiting high-level choreographers such as Blake to teach and add cache to the programs. She has shifted the focus of the school from the art and tradition of dance to the real-world appliance of booking the job or getting the agent. The parents love her because she is truly a visionary of creating the ultimate dancer factory but purists would find her revolting.
CAMEO

STORY LINE: Having grown up in the Maryland School of the Arts, Patrick Collins (18) feels creatively confined by the restraints of the now, more than ever, commercialized school. He hears of a legendary, underground team dance battle that happens every year called The Streets that only locals have access to (think Fight Club but for dance) and he is by no means a local. When Andie West (17), a B-girl who is part of the best team that competes in The Streets starts to attend MSA, sparks fly and Patrick is let into the underbelly of the Baltimore dance scene. Rather than about an outsider coming in, this is about an insider breaking out taking dance out of the studio and back to the streets where it all began. It's about defining who you are and discovering where you belong.

I personally think the casting director could save a lot of time if they took a look at the dancers in season 3 of So You Think You Can Dance. The show just chose the top 20 dancers who are going to appear on the show for America to vote, so that leaves thousands of qualified and hungry dancers who would die for a part in a movie like this.
