IN THE PRESS: Channing Tatum and 'Public Enemies' Featured in the UK's Empire Magazine

Channing Tatum's 'Public Enemies' Featured in the UK's Empire Magazine July 2009

The July 1st release date for Channing Tatum's upcoming Depression-era crime drama ' Public Enemies' is quickly approaching, and Empire Magazine just released a huge expose on the film in their July 2009 issue.

Based on the New York Times Best Selling author Bryan Burrough’s true crime book, ' Public Enemies' follows the FBI hunt for 1930’s gangster John Dillinger.

The Universal Studios film is directed by Michael Mann and boasts a stunning cast that includes Channing Tatum, Johnny Depp, Marion Cotillard, Christian Bale, Branka Katic, Billy Crudup, Giovanni Ribisi, Emilie de Ravin, John Michael Bolger, Stephen Dorff, Christian Stolte and Leelee Sobieski.

Here's what Empire Magazine had to say about the film that's at the top of their summer movie watching list...

Public Enemies: Johnny Depp. Michael Mann. Christian Bale. The question is why you’re still here reading this instead of booking tickets for Public Enemies, the Mann film that casts Depp as legendary 1930s gangster John Dillinger and Bale as Melvin Purvis, the FBI agent assigned to track him down. We talked to the filmmakers (including Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard) to get the full story on the film’s history – which goes back to a script Mann wrote in the 1970s) and see what we can expect from this latest Mann opus. Also, Kim Newman lays out the 20 Greatest Gangster Movies You’ve Probably Never Seen.

...and I also have high-quality scans of the full article for your reading pleasure:

Finally, here's an awesome new review of the film from the movie site Ramasscreen.com:

"Official 'Public Enemies' Character Posters: Johnny Depp as John DillingerPUBLIC ENEMIES is what Firepower is all about. You’ll never see a more exciting gunfight and shoot out this year. Director Michael Mann has crafted the ultimate cat-and-mouse game,… his best work yet. Non stop thriller action that takes only a few minutes to breathe in between before it takes you down again for a joy ride. Christian Bale and Johnny Depp are charismatic and unstoppable, the new Robert De Niro and Al Pacino of Heat. You’re gonna wanna see PUBLIC ENEMIES again and again. It makes you wanna get a tommy gun. Hands down, one of the best movies of the year.

In the action-thriller “Public Enemies,” acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard in the story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger (Depp)—the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public. No one could stop Dillinger and his gang. No jail could hold him. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone—from his girlfriend Billie Frechette (Cotillard) to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression. But while the adventures of Dillinger’s gang—later including the sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) and Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi)—thrilled many, Hoover (Billy Crudup) hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw’s capture as a way to elevate his Bureau of Investigation into the national police force that became the FBI. He made Dillinger America’s first Public Enemy Number One and sent in Purvis, the dashing “Clark Gable of the FBI.”.

Official 'Public Enemies' Character Posters: Marion Cotillard as Billie Frechette I’m a big fan of Michael Mann’s work...Mann’s return with PUBLIC ENEMIES doesn’t disappoint. When I got to meet him briefly at a screening, I knew I was in the presence of somebody’s just downright awesome. You can tell from PUBLIC ENEMIES that he’s brought back his signature marks, signs where you can easily tell it’s a Mann’s movie. He doesn’t try to come up with CG backdrop to give us a sight of an old 1930s city, he puts the camera on a tight leash and just focus on the characters and the art deco buildings. And just like his other action/thriller movies in the past, it always ends in the evening or there’ll be a massive showdown between two opposing parties in the middle of the dead night. Mann knows what the audiences would be rooting for in this type of movie, he makes sure that when Dillinger and his men make their getaway after a robbing a bank, they’d do it in style. Cinematographer Dante Spinottie who’s worked with Mann before knows what the master filmmaker wants and what we get are shots that give that reality impression and definitely heavy emphasis on the well-choreographed violence. I enjoy how the movie likes to keep using Otis Taylor’s catchy song ‘Ten Million Slaves’, somehow it fits perfectly in the presentation.

Johnny Depp is the epitome of cool, he knows it and uses it to the fullest for this role. His character John Dillinger’s got enough charm and confidence to spare but only has eyes for one lady. If you thought the way Jack Sparrow carried himself was infectious, wait til you see how Johnny Depp plays John Dillinger, he’s a bad guy who loves being infamous. The unlikely Robin Hood in a time of Great Depression when people could care less about the banks he robs.

Christian Bale who plays special Agent Melvin Purvis assigned to hunt down Dillinger, is as excellent as Depp. It’s like having 2 heavyweight fighters in a ring and the match is long overdue. They both keep each other on their toes.

Bale has been known as an actor who can listen well and mimic any accent. He puts down a great effort to sound like he wasn’t born in Wales.

Official 'Public Enemies' Character Posters: Christian Bale as Melvin PurvisGreat star-studded cast overall, Michael Mann’s lucky enough to have excellent actors signing up from left and right to play both members of the gang and members of the FBI including Billy Crudup who captures young Edgar Hoover’s insecure, arrogant and stubborn personality down pat. Marion Cotillard gives a great supporting performance as the girlfriend who’s willing to risk everything for a man she barely knows. She’s not an easy woman for Dillinger to conquer.

What really will get you hooked, once again, is the cat and mouse game. Purvis catches Dillinger but Dillinger gets away, Purvis closing in on Dillinger but Dillinger is one step ahead of all of them. You see many different ways it’s done throughout the entire movie and you’ll get entertained every single time. Just when you thought the bad guy’s captured and the good guy gets all the gory, the game begins again.

I’m glad Mann decided to take the story up a notch by not just making it about Dillinger Vs. Purvis, it’s about what would happen when a man is pushed to the point of desperation. You never work with or never ever trust a desperate man, that’s the theme that you see in the character development. Both Dillinger and Purvis are good at what they do, but then circumstances happen that would turn them into desperate men. Alienated by his business partners, Dillinger starts to lose what makes him hard to catch in the first place. Without realizing it he starts to create predictable patterns and habits that would eventually get him easily fooled, he becomes unaware of unwanted surprises . Pressured by Edgar Hoover, Melvin Purvis finds himself allowing certain methods to get Dillinger, the ends justify the means is the result. Some say that Michael Mann’s endings rarely hit the level of satisfactory, I say PUBLIC ENEMIES’ ending won’t let you down, without being too extravagant, it concludes itself just the right way. (5 out of 5)"

Midwesterners flocked to the various filming locations last year and are also going to get opportunities to watch the film at early screenings through out Wisconsin and Indiana on June 30th and after the film is released. Below you will find links to additional info for some of the upcoming screenings:

IN THE PRESS: Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan’s Memorial Day on JustJared.com & ‘G.I. Joe’ on ET

Channing Tatum and Fiancee Jenna Dewan with Dogs Lulu and Meeka on Memorial Day

Yesterday Chan tweeted for the first time on his official Twitter to let us know his Memorial Day plans. Chan's historic first tweet said...

"Hey y'all..I know it's not that interesting, but we are cleaning the house on this memorial day weekend..Spring cleaning and running!"

Today we have pics from JustJared.com that clearly backup the running part of Channing Tatum's story and show him and his fiancee Jenna Dewan taking their dogs for a walk on Memorial Day in LA's popular Runyon Canyon Park.

In the new photos we even get a good look at Jenna's adorable dog Meeka that was a gift from Chan a little over a year ago and Chan's new puppy Lulu. As I previously reported, the lucky dog was about 7 weeks old when Chan rescued her from an Alabama dog sheltor last Christmas while visiting family and after filming wrapped on ‘Dear John‘.

You can check out all of the new photos in the slideshow below:

Finally, I want to let you all know that Chan and the cast of the highly-anticipated summer blockbuster 'G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra' will be featured on tonight's ET. You can check out an article from their website and some footage from tonight's upcoming interview below...

Channing Tatum and the 'G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra' Cast Featured on ET (May 26, 2009)It's heroes vs. villains in the all-new, live-action adventure 'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra,' in theaters August 7, and we're with four of the film's stars -- Sienna Miller, Marlon Wayans, Rachel Nichols and Channing Tatum -- who are lucky to be in one piece after filming some of the movie's more spectacular stunts!

"I think the craziest one I did, they strapped me to the front of a Humvee going about 60 miles per hour swerving through the streets of Prague, which is doubling for Paris," says Channing, who plays Duke. "It was good, though -- didn't get hurt, thank God."

Everyone had to get in tip-top shape for their roles, and Marlon, who plays Ripcord, says, "We all worked out really, really hard. … When you're playing a Joe, you've got to be a Joe."

"We did six weeks of fight training, so we did it the healthy way," add Rachel and Sienna.

Based on the beloved Hasbro toys that became a comic book and cartoon sensation in the '80s, 'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra' stars Dennis Quaid as Hawk, the tough team leader of G.I. Joe, an elite, globetrotting unit that takes on the evil Cobra Organization.

"It's a real fast-paced sort of thrill ride," says Rachel, who plays Shana "Scarlett" O'Hara.

Sienna, who wore a black wig for the movie as The Baroness, confirms, "It was not a dye job. This is an old-fashioned tale of good versus evil, and historically the good guys tend to be blonde, and lighter, and the bad people tend to have black hair, like witches -- it adds to villain-esque behavior. And also, she's a very famous character within the cartoons and there's a specific way that she looks, the same with Scarlett with the red hair, and so we had to be true to the characters the way they were created."

ET surprised the cast with their own action figures from the movie, and Marlon pointed out that when he was a kid, "I didn't have money for G.I. Joes and fancy dolls that could move and articulate all their fingers and limbs. I had money for the 99 cent [version]."

"But now he does [have money], so he's got all of them," says Channing.

"Now you get to be a doll," adds Rachel.

"Holla!" says Marlon with a high five.

Here's the video...

NEWS FLASH: Channing Tatum's 'Fighting' Trainer Shares His Detailed Workout Plan

Channing Tatum and His 'Fighting' Trainer William J. Harris

Last year, I posted an interview I had with Channing Tatum's trainer from his newly released film 'Fighting' where fans learned about the workout routine and diet that allowed Chan to safely lose over 30 pounds in 3 weeks prior to the start of filming.

The fitness site GoHealthyGoFit.com recently took an educated guess at what they thought was Chan's workout for the film. When Chan's actual trainer, William J. Harris from Billion Dollar Bodies, read the article, he felt he needed to set the record strait by sharing an actual account of Chan's workout plan prior to and during filming.

You can check out snippets from the article below...

Channing Tatum in 'Fighting' (Wallpaper)"When speaking with Dito Montiel, the director of FIGHTING, his main concerns were making sure Channing looked like a “normal” athletic guy, not a bodybuilder or a waify marathon runner and that he was physically capable of handling the rigorous demands of his fight training and shooting schedule. So in essence, Channing had to be trained and fed like an athlete...
With Channing, we followed a 3 day on 1 day off cycle with each session consisting of high intensity, calisthenic based full body circuit workouts which lasted no more than 30 minutes each. We used absolutely NO machines, simply dumbbells, a medicine ball, and a jump rope!...
While Channing’s workouts did systematically allow for proper cycles of work, rest, and recovery, there was not a set “routine”. Routine is the enemy! I say that because in order to maintain consistent change and progress, you can not allow the body to plateau. So for example, a typical workout cycle would look like this:

  • Day 1 - 5 sets done as fast as possible of: 10 pull-ups, 30 kettlebell swings, and 50 walking lunge steps.

  • Day 2 - 7 sets done as fast as possible of: 150 rope skips and 15 clean and jerks.

  • Day 3 - 3 sets done as fast as possible of: 100 mountain climbers, 75 push-ups, 50 sit-ups, and 25 box jumps.

Notice how over the course of a 3 day cycle every major muscle group was targeted, however we did ZERO isolation moves..."

Before discussing Chan's meal plan, Will makes it really clear that he is not a nutritionist, but he simply makes basic common sense meal plan recommendations that have been highly successful with his clients. In regards to eating, for the average person, he believes in using a lot more common sense and a lot less science...

Channing Tatum in 'Fighting' - Wallpaper"Once someone understands the function of protein, carbohydrates, fats and why they should or should not eat them in relation to their goals, it makes healthy eating relatively easy. I recommend reading up on the Paleo Diet and creating your personal plan around that philosophy. I also recommend finding a local organic farmer and butcher, and centering your diet around poultry, fish, eggs, lean meats plenty of green veggies, and plenty of fruit. Furthermore, learning to prepare your favorite dishes in a healthier way as opposed to eradicating them altogether helps eliminate those “cravings” which will derail even those of us with the strongest of willpower. In my opinion, the only limitations and restrictions that need to be put in place are on salt, sugar, and refined carbs.
The method I use with all of my clients is to simply measure their daily activity level and fuel their bodies accordingly. So for example, Channing’s morning started with 2 hours of fight training followed by our workout, then script readings, rehearsals, and meetings that didn’t require much physical strain for the rest of the day. Based on that schedule, it was clear that the most physically demanding part of his day was most often before 1pm so that’s when the majority of his fruits and carbohydrates were consumed. The rest of his meals and snacks for the day were comprised of lean protein sources, veggies, nuts, and select dairy products. Of course this is not what he ate every day, but here’s a general outline:

  • Breakfast - veggie omelet, multigrain toast, Morningstar vegetarian sausage patties, and orange slices.

  • AM snack - apple slices and unsalted mixed nuts.

  • Lunch - grilled bbq chicken breast, spinach, and a sweet potato.

  • Afternoon snack - string cheese and unsalted mixed nuts.

  • Dinner - a turkey burger, broccoli, and carrots.

  • PM snack - yogurt and unsalted almonds (and a jell-o cup if something sweet was desired).

He simply ate a clean and well balanced diet. Again, that’s not exactly what he ate every day, but that was the basis of his diet. Channing also ate whole wheat pizza topped with grilled chicken and broccoli, turkey lasagna made with multi-grain pasta and specially made sauces and cheeses, turkey bacon cheeseburgers with sweet potato fries, and other specially made dishes which broke up the monotony and made his diet enjoyable…which is also a key component of maintaining healthy eating habits. It’s all about learning to season your foods without loading them up with salt, sugar, and excess calories."

'Fighting' Wallpaper (Channing Tatum)For those who are interested in trying the above method of training, you can get free daily workouts on Will's blog. For those who want someone to thank for Chan's shirtless scenes in 'Fighting', you may want to start with William J. Harris of Billion Dollar Bodies, Inc., especially since Chan's idea of a good meal includes a healthy serving of cheeseburgers and some beer. I wonder if Will managed to find a healthy alternative for either of Chan's self-professed favs. ;-D

NEWS FLASH: Channing Tatum Featured on New 'G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra' Video Games & in 'Dance Flick'

Channing Tatum as Duke in 'G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra' on Game CoversAs I previously reported, Electronic Arts is developing the G.I. JOE: Rise of Cobra video game, and yesterday, they revealed all of the cover shots of every system where the game is being released (PlayStation 3, Sony PSP, PlayStation 2, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360).

The G.I. JOE video game will feature an exclusive storyline that picks up where the live-action movie leaves off, allowing players to re-create and re-live the greatest moments from the film, cartoon series and action figure toy line.

The game covers feature Channing Tatum as Duke, Marlon Wayans as Ripcord, Rachel Nichols as Scarlett, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Heavy Duty, Ray Park as Snakes Eyes, Byung-hun Lee as Storm Shadow, and Sienna Miller as The Baroness.

The game will actually feature a total of 12 G.I. JOE® characters, each with unique abilities and weapons, and will include an intense single-screen co-op mode allowing two players to easily unite as a team in a classic struggle between good and evil as they work together to defeat the powers of the COBRA organization.

Below you can check out Chan in the official box art for the games in the slideshow. Enjoy!!!

Electronic Arts G.I. JOE: The Rise of Cobra video games will be released on July 27, 2009.

On a kind-of-related side note, Cinemablend caught up with Channing Tatum's 'G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra' co-star and really good friend Marlon Wayans last week during a press conference for his new movie 'Dance Flick', in theaters today.

It's said that imitation is the highest form of flattery, and Marlon talked about how the parody pokes fun at Chan's role in 'Step Up' and how Chan handled the ribbing when he saw footage of the movie when they were filming 'G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra'. Here's a little snippet from the article...
And Wayans says Tatum was well aware of the mockery that was going on on the Dance Flick set. "At lunch, he would come in my trailer and watch the dailies [for Dance Flick] with me. He'd be like, 'Dude, that's so wrong! Are you making fun of me? That's hilarious!' But what a sport, man. It's a testament to the kind of kid he is."

The Wayans clan also made sure not to leave Jenna Dewan out of the fun, because her role of Nora from 'Step Up' gets spoofed too in the parody. If you want to see how well Chan and Jenna's doppelgangers do in the film and you want to see Rotten Tomatoes' most highly rated new film, go check out 'Dance Flick' this weekend!

NEWS FLASH: Channing Tatum's 'Eagle of the Ninth' Excels at 2009 Cannes Film Festival

Channing Tatum with Actor Jamie Bell and Director Kevin MacDonald from 'The Eagle of the Ninth'
Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell, and Kevin MacDonald from 'The Eagle of the Ninth'

Good news is coming out of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival for one of Channing Tatum's upcoming films.

Although some have reported slow film sales at Cannes, 'The Eagle of the Ninth', which is being sold by Focus Features International, has currently been acquired by buyers in every major territory worldwide with the exception of Japan. This means that the $23 million epic that stars Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell, and Donald Sutherland has now lined up distributors all over the world and is one step closer to being created.

Some of the bigger deals inked include France's Metropolitan, Germany's Telemunchen and Bim in Italy. The film will be distributed by Focus Features domestically and Universal in the U.K., Spain, Australia and Latin America. Rights have also gone to Scandinavia (Nordisk); Benelux (RCV); South Korea: (Ssamzie); Greece (Odeon); Israel (Shani); Portugal (Castello Lopes); the Middle East (Italia), and numerous other countries around the world.

Alison Thompson (Focus Features International President of Sales and Distribution) said she was also in the process of closing deals with South Africa, Thailand, Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Turkey.

Thompson tells Variety, "In this very strange Cannes, we're almost embarrassed to have done so well with this project...We're happy to report the pre-sales business is alive and kicking. People love the idea of Scots overcoming the mightiest army of the world - it's 'Braveheart' for a new generation."

The Daily Record is saying that the film has became a Cannes hit because of its strong script, cast and director and the success of similar productions such as 'Gladiator' and the American HBO series "Rome", starring Scot Kevin McKidd.

Finally, 'The Eagle of the Ninth' producer Duncan Kenworthy, of 'Four Weddings And A Funeral' and 'Notting Hill' fame, said of his latest project: "People are looking for surefire hits. Clearly, 'Eagle' is being viewed in that way."
'The Eagle of the Ninth' is based on the best-selling, classic 1954 teen novel by Rosemary Sutcliff. The film will be directed by Kevin MacDonald and the screenplay was adapted by Jeremy Brock (who previously worked with MacDonald on the award winning 'The Last King Of Scotland'),

Set in Britain during the 2nd century A.D., it's the story of a wounded Roman soldier (Channing Tatum) and his Celtic slave (Jamie Bell) who embark on a perilous journey into the far north to discover what happened the Ninth Legion, which went on a mission into the wilds of Scotland 15 years earlier and never came back. The soldier's father was the legion's general, and his disappearance, along with the loss of the legion's symbol, the eponymous eagle, cast a stain upon his family.

Production is set to start in August, and I'm already taking applications from Scottish fans who want to be my eyes and ears during filming. They will be based in Glasgow for approximately 5 or 6 weeks and will then take smaller crews into the Highlands for 3 or 4 weeks. Many of the scenes will be filmed near Loch Lomond, in addition to other Highland areas in Scotland.

Because Cannes sales have gone so well for 'The Eagle of the Ninth', I'm excited to say that many of Chan's fans around the world will have an opportunity to see this film when it hits theaters in 2010!!!
