NEWS FLASH: Is Channing Tatum's 'Pinkville' More Than Just a Casualty of the Writer's Strike?

If I've learned anything over the past year from doing this blog, I've learned that the movie-making business is one of the most fragile things I've ever seen in my life. From scheduling conflicts to unpredictable actors to unresolved writer's strikes, it's seems to take an act of Congress to get a movie made these days.

If you've been reading CTU for the past couple of weeks, you know that Channing Tatum's movie 'Pinkville' announced they were postponing filming because of the writer's strike. IMBD has actually been buzzing since this announcement with people close to the production saying that there may be a little more to the cancellation story.

Since many of these sources were people upset about the production shutting down, I held off writing about what I was hearing, because I wanted to get the information from a more reliable industry source first. Then yesterday came the Variety article below that seems to confirm a lot of what I've been hearing.

You can read a snippet of the entire article below to see some additional reasons why it sadly may be a while before 'Pinkville' comes to a theater near any of us....

Hollywood's New Scapegoat
Strike allows some to bail out of projects
By ANNE THOMPSON
Posted: Thurs., Nov. 29, 2007, 7:43pm PT

During the best of times, movies heading toward production are fragile chemical equations. Add a writers' strike to that mix and things were bound to explode. "It's tough enough to get things right," says one senior agent. "This difficult situation makes it even more difficult. If something is risky it's always the first casualty, whether there's a strike or anything else."

So it was no surprise when five volatile go-projects fell apart last week: Sony pulled the February start for Ron Howard's "Da Vinci Code" sequel "Angels & Demons," starring Tom Hanks; United Artists shut down Oliver Stone's November starter "Pinkville," an investigation into the My Lai massacre starring Bruce Willis; Warner Bros. pushed back Mira Nair's Indian epic "Shantaram," starring Johnny Depp; Weinstein Co. postponed "Nine," Rob Marshall's screen adaptation of the Broadway musical inspired by Fellini's "8 ½"; and when Brad Pitt pulled out of Kevin Macdonald's political thriller "State of Play," Universal threatened to sue.

Players involved in all five pics cited striking writers as a key factor in scuttling the projects. But while the strike certainly made things more vexing, there were also other forces at play. The strike offers studios, filmmakers and movie stars a smokescreen for doing just what they want to do, with a convenient scapegoat.

"It's a get-out-of-jail-free card," says one producer.

Over the past six months the looming writers' strike (with potential director and actor walkouts threatened in July 2008), pushed the studios to announce a raft of green lights sooner than they would have under normal circumstances. Stars jostled for position on projects lined up for takeoff like planes at LaGuardia. But many of those commitments seem less firm than if writers were available to make changes.

Take Stone's "Pinkville." The Vietnam era movie was just three weeks away from principal photography on Dec. 10, with complex sets built in Thailand and a large cast led by Bruce Willis prepping to fly to Southeast Asia, when UA chief Paula Wagner shut it down. She cites WGA member Stone's habitual script-tinkering throughout shooting as the main reason for not being able to proceed. Not being able to write during a strike "violates his process," she says. But the script, by Stone and Mikko Alanne, had been locked down enough to get the movie to the verge of shooting.

It was Willis who had made the film's financing possible by taking a fraction of his normal fee. And it was Willis who walked away, saying that the script was only 90% there, and booked another, more commercial, film with a bigger payday, Jonathan Mostow's "The Surrogates," originally ready to go in March, now set for February for Touchstone Pictures. Some parties say there was a "scheduling issue," while others insist that the two movies could have gone back to back.

Stone is repped by CAA partner Rick Nicita, who is married to Wagner. Obviously, UA had initially wanted to work with the filmmaker. But today's harsh box office climate for political war films makes it likely that in the wake of Robert Redford and UA co-head Tom Cruise's disastrous political screed "Lions for Lambs," Willis's withdrawal gave UA an excuse to shut down a commercially risky film. It is improbable that "Pinkville," even with "Platoon" director Stone attached, will get made anytime soon. Encumbered by several million dollars in costs, it needs another star to save it....(click here to read more)

So what have we learned?

First of all, don't underestimate the gossip mongers on IMDB. A lot of industry insiders hang out on that site, and you'll be surprised what you can learn. Of course you should ALWAYS take anything you read on the internet with a grain of salt (including this blog).

Secondly, 'Pinkville' may be a casualty of more than just the writer's strike, but let's all just hope the Tinseltown gods will smile upon us and somehow the movie will still get made (assuming they resolve whatever environment and casting issues exist now).

Finally, we know that, in addition to the 4 movies that Channing has releasing next year, he also has no less than 5 other projects on his dance card, subsequently keeping himself and all of us fans pretty busy in 2008 (with or without 'Pinkville'). ;-D

CHANNING TATUM FOR DUMMIES...Everything You Ever Wanted to Know

Channing Tatum for Dummies is a series of articles where I try to answer the most frequently asked questions about Channing Tatum that I receive from readers or find on message boards all over the internet.

Here are today's Channing Tatum frequently asked questions and answers:

Fabulous Channing Tatum Fan Question:
Is Channing Tatum going to play the lead in a movie created from Nicholas Sparks' book "Dear John"?
CTU Answer:
Channing Tatum has been chosen to play the lead character of John Tyree from Nicholas Sparks' bestselling book "Dear John". Writer Jamie Linden is currently working on the script and the movie is supposed to have it's theatrical release some time in 2009. You can CLICK HERE to learn more.

Fabulous Channing Tatum Fan Question:
Did Channing Tatum actually do all the dances in 'Step Up'?
CTU Answer:
Yes Channing did all of his own dances in 'Step Up' . He's a naturally talented dancer that taught himself how to dance by attending coming-of-age parties in the Hispanic community called Quiceneras when he was growing up in Tampa, Florida. Although Channing did not receive formal dance training prior to 'Step Up', he worked closely with highly-talented choreographers like Jamal Sims during the shoot to give us all of those memorable dance scenes that he is now so well-known for.

Fabulous Channing Tatum Fan Question:
What is Channing Tatum's official website?
CTU Answer:
I'm proud to say that, as of August 16, 2007, this site, Channing Tatum Unwrapped, became Channing Tatum's official site. If you want to know more about the second most amazing day in CTU history (the first being the day I finally got to meet Channing), you can CLICK HERE to read the story.

Fabulous Channing Tatum Fan Question:
Do you know Channing Tatum?
CTU Answer:
When I started this site in January, I was just a huge fan writing a fan blog about him, but sadly I did not know Channing. I'm now more than happy to say that I know him, because he asked for CTU to be his official site in August. I was finally able to meet him when he invited me to the New York set of his film 'Fighting' in October. You can CLICK HERE to read all about my unforgettable day hanging out with Chan on set.

Fabulous Channing Tatum Fan Question:
How do you find all of your information on Channing Tatum?
CTU Answer:
This was actually a question that even Chan asked me himself. It does take a bit of work to create at least one article everyday for the blog (especially on those weeks where news bites are few and far between), but my sources for information on Channing are not as mysterious as they seem. Although I am able to get some of my information from Chan's mom and Chan himself, I really try not to bother them any more than I have to.

Search engines are actually my best friend here at CTU. By using tools like Google Alerts, I get a lot of my information from an endless amount of sites on the internet. The marketing companies promoting Chan's movies like 'A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints', 'Battle in Seattle', 'Step Up 2: The Streets', and 'Stop-Loss' will also send me information. I get most of the behind-the-scenes and casting film news from users who post information on IMDB, sites where you can post casting calls, sites of actors that have worked with him and all types of blogs.

People might be surprised at the amount of information that is on the internet if you know how to search for it and weed through what's real and what's not, which can be difficult online. My ultimate goal is to gather and verify all of the information I find into one place here at CTU so all of you don't have to work nearly as hard to learn about Chan and his projects. From the feedback I get from readers and even Chan himself, I feel like I may have succeeded at that goal.

Fabulous Channing Tatum Fan Question:
Do you work for Channing Tatum?
CTU Answer:
Technically I don't work for him, because I created and maintain this site on a voluntary basis. But if we had to put a name to what I do for Chan here at CTU each day, I would be called a new media or digital publicist.

All that means is that I use this site and social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook, and IMDB to help promote Chan and his projects and to help his fans better connect with him by answering their questions and keeping you all updated on what he's doing. It's actually a fairly new field in the entertainment industry that has surfaced because of the Web 2.0 (aka social networking site) revolution. Fans no longer just want to read about an actor, they want to also be able to interact with each other in communities full of people with the same interests.

But for the record, if ever asked, I would work for him in a heartbeat, because he's one of the most talented, hard working, genuine and nicest people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Much like doing this blog has been a dream, I can definitely say that working for, with, or around him in any capacity would be the same.

Fabulous Channing Tatum Fan Question:
Is Channing Tatum in 'War of the Worlds'?
CTU Answer:
Channing Tatum has an uncredited part in 'War of the Worlds' where he plays a boy in the church scene. Everyone has trouble finding him in the film, because his part was edited out of the final cut.

Fabulous Channing Tatum Fan Question:
Is Channing in Step Up 2 and when will Step Up 2 premiere?
CTU Answer:
'Step Up' fans can breathe a sigh of relief, because Channing Tatum does have a cameo in 'Step Up 2: The Streets' and we will once again get to see him in all of his dance glory on the big screen. You can CLICK HERE to learn more about the day Channing spent on set filming the cameo, and you can also CLICK HERE to see some of his amazing dance performance (which involves hidden trampolines in the dance floor and a huge backflip off a DJ booth) in the new trailer for the film. Here are the latest release dates for the film around the world:

  • Netherlands – February 14, 2008
  • USA – February 14, 2008
  • Czech Republic – February 14, 2008 ***NEW RELEASE DATE***
  • UK – February 15, 2008
  • Russia - March 13, 2008
  • Slovakia – March 18, 2008
  • France – April 23, 2008
  • Germany – April 24, 2008

Fabulous Channing Tatum Fan Question:
What is Channing Tatum's birth name?
CTU Answer:
Channing's full birth name is Channing Matthew Tatum. The Channing Bryan Isaac Tatum Anderson you see on many fan sites has never been correct. You can CLICK HERE to learn how CTU debunked this rumor and was able to get his name corrected on sites like IMDB and Wikipedia.

Fabulous Channing Tatum Fan Question:
Did Channing go to military school? Where did he go to highschool?
CTU Answer:
Channing actually did not go to military school. It's my understanding that he attended junior high school at Oak Grove and Ben Hill and attended highschool at both Gaither and Tampa Catholic in Tampa, Florida.

Fabulous Channing Tatum Fan Question:
How can I send Channing Tatum fan mail? Is there an email address for fan mail?
CTU Answer:
There is not currently an email address where you can communicate with Channing, so if you want to send him fan mail, you can send it to Chan's management office. Here is the address:

Channing Tatum
Management 360
9111 Wilshire Blvd.
Beverly Hills, CA 90210

Fabulous Channing Tatum Fan Question:
How can I get Channing Tatum's autograph?
CTU Answer:
Being a reader of Channing's official site definitely has it's priviledges. CTU readers are very lucky, because Channing has signed a batch of magazines for all of you. I try to give out at least one each month to one lucky Chanaholic. :-) If you want to try to win one of the magazines personally autographed by Channing for CTU readers, CLICK HERE to learn about the latest contest that may just help you get one.

Thanks for submitting these questions! If you want to submit a question about Channing Tatum, email it ctfd@channingtatumunwrapped.com and I will try to get it answered for you in the following Channing Tatum for Dummies article. I cannot guarantee that I will have an answer for every question, but I will tell you what I know (or at the very least give you an opinion on the subject).

Here's a poster for Channing Tatum's new movie 'Stop-Loss' that shows cast members Ryan Phillippe, Channing Tatum, Abbie Cornish, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

You can find this poster and new screen shots in the 'Stop-Loss' set in the photo gallery. You can also find approximately 70 new pictures I just added this morning in the Channing Tatum Unwrapped photo gallery from various events Chan has attended over the past few years. I'd like to give a huge thanks to CTU Reader Rialle for sending most of the great photos to me.

In addition to the March 28, 2008 release in the US and the April 18, 2008 release in the UK, I also wanted to let all of the Fabulous Channing Tatum Fans in Germany know that Channing Tatum and Ryan Phillippe's highly-anticipated war drama, 'Stop-Loss', will have it's theatrical release in your country on June 19, 2008.

If you like the songs in the new 'Stop-Loss' trailer, you can now hear both Snow Patrol's "Open Your Eyes" and Drowning Pools "Bodies" on the CTU MP3 player. I have also added three songs from the 'She's the Man' soundtrack on the player, thanks to Fabulous Channing Tatum Fan Louis.

You can CLICK HERE to go to the MP3 player, or you can use the player on the left side of each page of the blog. Just scroll down and click on songs 25 - 29 to hear all of the new songs. Enjoy!!!

Today GQ Magazine announced the honorees for the magazine's twelfth annual Men of the Year issue, which features the three separate covers you can see below.

It should be no surprise to CTU readers that Channing Tatum was chosen as GQ's Man of Next Year. REMINDER: Don't Forget to Send in A Photo for Channing Tatum's Christmas Gift!!!!

I just want to remind all CTU readers that Channing Tatum Unwrapped is creating a fan video for our favorite actor as his Christmas gift this year. And don't forget that anyone who submits a photo is also automatically entered in our latest drawing to win a magazine article personally signed by Channing Tatum!!!

Fabulous Channing Tatum Fans around the world now have less than two weeks to submit pictures of yourselves or your favorite pictures of Channing to CTU so they can be added to the fan video.

Each fan is allowed to submit one photo of yourself or your favorite Channing photo. I personally prefer for you to send a picture of yourself so Chan can see his fans.

Please use a graphics tool like Microsoft Paint, Photoshop Elements, or one of the online tools that let you add the following text to the bottom right corner your photos if possible, so Chan will know who you are and where you're from:

  • Name
  • City
  • State (Only for US Residents)
  • Country
If you send a picture of yourself, the additional text is optional, but if you choose to send a picture of Chan, then you are required to add your information on the photo for it to be used in the fan video.

Once you have added your text to the photo, you then need to email it to gift@channingtatumunwrapped.com by the November 30th submission deadline.

Here's a few great examples of what fans around the world have already sent in...

Thanks for all of the great photos so far. I can't wait to get even more from everyone!!!!

So how do you win the personally autograghed magazine? Well, anyone who submits a photo for Chan's Christmas gift will automatically be entered in a contest to win one of the magazines that Channing personally autographed for CTU readers.

One lucky gift giver will win the autographed issue of the June 2007 Interview Magazine where Channing Tatum was chosen as one of their 'New Pop A-List: 50 to Watch (Age 30 or Under)'.

Show your love for Channing and help us make an awesome Christmas gift for him by submitting your photo to CTU by November 30, 2007 and you may just get a little piece of Channing as a gift for yourself! ;-)

Don't forget to come back to CTU on December 1, 2007 to see if you're the lucky winner of the autographed magazine!!! I will also post the completed video on the blog some time before Christmas so everyone can enjoy it.
