Channing Tatum's Bumpy Road to Stardom

From leaving college in West Virginia early to sweating bullets as a sunburned construction worker in Florida to succeeding as Tinseltown's most desired up-and-comer, Channing Tatum's shot to stardom has beat the odds and surpassed even his own expectations.

Looking fly in his Armani gear, Channing's IFilm.com inspirational interview below was done during the huge Step Up press tour.

I like to watch his interviews, because he often gives us insight into who he was when he was younger and into who he is as a person now. Here are some of the gems we get in this interview:

• Channing has an aversion to computers. More specifically, he feels that computers have an aversion to him. He says he thinks little gremlins come around whenever he tries to use any computer you put in front of him.

• The interviewer asks Channing what was the worst trouble he got in growing up as a teenager in Florida. Channing reluctantly explains, to the dismay of his publicist, that he and his friends used to pass the time with typical "country-bumpkin nonsense" by doing minor damage to housing developments. Unlike his character Tyler Gage in Step Up, they lucked out and never got into trouble with the law, because they would hide out in the surrounding woods if the police ever came around.

• Although he had a variety of jobs prior to getting his break into modeling, Channing's hardest job by far was framing houses in the construction industry in Florida where at some point he lived with his sister. He explains a typical day of getting up at 6:30AM to get to work by 7AM, having lunch at 11 or 12 and working until 4 or 5 in a tank top and shorts in the hot Florida sun while you pray for a rainy day to help beat the heat.

• In acting, Channing feels that some days are relatively easy and some days are are insanely hard. For example, they shot the finale of Step Up in 4 days and the cast was extremely exhausted, bruised, and battered by the end of the rigorous routine.

• Channing's love of dancing extends far beyond the Step Up set. Unlike his competitive raver club-kid days when he was a teenager where you would find him battling on any and every dance floor he touched, he now loves to just dance for fun.

• Channing also feels that over the years luck really played a role in the amazing opportunities that came his way, because he had so many people and friends come into his life at the right time and truly believe in him.

• Channing says that anyone who has dreams should always make an attempt to reach them. His mother, who he is very close to, always told him that success comes when preparation meets opportunity. In short, you have to be ready to walk through that proverbial door when it opens for you.

Channing Tatum is about as far away as you can get from his hammer and nail days in the hot Florida sun. What impresses me the most about him is that he has been able to succeed in Hollywood without losing his humility. He instead has the inate ability to appreciate where he came from and the maturity to know where he wants to go and how to get there.

Channing Tatum started exercising martial arts at the age of six. He loved the sport so much that he achieved belted status in Kung Fu and Gor-Chor Kung Fu, and has years of experience practicing the ancient art of Wah-lum and Capoeira, the Brazilian dance/martial artform. If this one's not a great wallpaper for your computer, I don't know what is.

NEWS FLASH: UK AGTRYS Movie Release Cinemas, Events, and Competitions

Here is another picture of Channing Tatum at last year's Sundance film festival for AGTRYS. I really love his sense of style. As you probably already know, Channing Tatum's movie will be released nationwide in the United Kingdom on March 2, 2007.

AGTRYS is also promising there will be lots of events to coincide with the release, including, special screenings, parties, and a premiere in the UK.

The movie is based on the memoir, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, which was written by AGTRYS's director Dito Montiel. To coincide with the release of the film, AGTRYS is going to give away 5 signed copies of the book. They did not specify who is going to sign the book, but I am hoping it is the cast.

To enter you can send an email with your name and address, with SAINTS BOOK in the subject field, to info@revolvergroup.com and saints@revolvergroup.com to get a chance to win. The competition closes at the end of April 2007. Because they did not specify, I assume that you do not have to live in the UK and that anyone is eligible to enter.

Yet Another Channing Tatum Improvised Scene Showing He's the Man

DID YOU KNOW?...So it looks like Channing not only can improvise dramatic scenes, but the talented actor has also improvised comedic scenes in his successful 2006 movie She's the Man. In the IFilm.com interview below with stars Channing Tatum and Amanda Bynes, she talks about how the director gave them the freedom to explore there own ideas about their characters.

Amanda also mentions how she became impressed with Channing's acting skills when he showed his improvisational chops in the HILARIOUS gym scene with Amanda's character Sebastian and Channing's character Duke's love interest Olivia, played by Laura Ramsey.

You may remember the part where Channing switches into "suave mode" by smoothly hitting his head on the exercise machine when he starts talking to Olivia and coolly flipping open the cell phone to take a call. Again it seems that neither of these were planned, but made it into the final cut of the movie.

I definitely get Channings sense of humor. I have to admit that the gym scene was one that I actually had to replay, because I thought it was so funny.

It is obvious that Channing has amazing instincts and let's hope those instincts give him the staying power he needs to continue his success in Tinsletown for many years to come.

RUMOR OR REEL?: Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan Breakup Debunked

If you've been reading the blog over the past few weeks, you may be familiar with my previous Rumor or Reel entry on the rumors around Channing and Jenna's possible breakup. I definitely did not start the false rumor, but I hope that I may have had something to do with helping to bring it to an end.

In the previous entry, I mentioned that there was a site called WhosDatedWho.com that said Jenna and Channing stopped dating at the end of 2006 and that Channing started dating some person named Megan Dewall right after. I also mentioned that mysteriously I couldn't find ANY information on this Megan person on the internet and Who's Dated Who did not have a photo.

Happily now I think I know why I couldn't find anything on Ms.Dewall. I learned that Who's Dated Who is actually updated by fans submitting information to the company. They then try to "verify" the information that is submitted. I don't know what that verification process is, but it seems to me that this Megan person may have duped Who's Dated Who.

Maybe its from all those years of watching Matlock, Murder She Wrote, or Veronica Mars or it's just my natural nosiness, but I have always been a pretty good detective. Instead of the mystery starting with the death of a person, it started with the rumored death of Channing and Jenna's relationship.

So how did Channing Tatum Unwrapped help debunk the rumor you may ask? Well, once I figured out what may be going on, I submitted an update to the site letting them know I felt the information was inaccurate. To substantiate this, I sent them a link to my article showing them pictures of Channing and Jenna in 2007. They not only added my comment to the site, but they also removed Megan Dewall from Channing's dating history. The picture above shows the updated page with only Jenna Dewan and Amanda Bynes.

As I have always said, take what you read on the internet (including this blog) with a grain of salt. To think that this whole false breakup report may have started with a person who thought it would be funny to submit there own name to the site. It just shows you how crazy the internet and celebrity can be. With rumors like this working against you, I don't think we have to wonder why it's so hard to stay in a relationship in Hollywood.

So based on the my theory, maybe you too can date a star if you can get past Who's Dated Who's screeners. I am not advocating that you do what I think Megan did, because I really hate that this particular false update contributed to a completely untrue breakup of a really great couple.

P.S. Now you may be saying to yourself "Why does Who's Dated Who have Amanda Bynes listed on Channing's profile when we all know they did not date?" (see this CTU article that debunks the Amanda Bynes dating rumor too). Well I figured I would fight one battle at a time. I will now work on getting that false rumor fixed to. Don't worry your pretty little head. CTU's on the case. ;-)

Here is another one of Channing Tatum's modeling pictures strait from the runway of the Sean John Fall 2003 fashion show. I personally am not a big fan of fur on men, or women for that matter, but I would pretty much take Channing rolled in dog crap if given the opportunity.

As you can see, Channing has, what I affectionately call, his "model face" on. You know, it's that hot attitudinal combination of "I know I'm sexy", "I'm just too cool for school", and "I'm SOOO MANLY I can rock this crazy fur assemble". Channing can pretty much pull off any outfit designers throw his way.

Channing Tatum's Improvised Scene in AGTRYS

DID YOU KNOW?...Here is a picture of Channing taken at the Sundance Film Festival in January of 2006 where he seems to be channeling a little bit of his tough charactor Antonio from A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints.

There is a dramatic scene in AGTRYS where one of the characters has a stroke. Out of frustration, Channing's character Antonio throws a table through the glass window of a door. This was a huge surprise to the director, cast, and crew, because it was not a part of the script. Channing had improvised it. He actually got so wrapped up in the scene, he nearly lost control. The rest of the cast managed to stay in character and finish the scene, and the director ended up liking Channing's surprise improv so much he kept it as the final version.

CHANNING TATUM FOR DUMMIES: What kind of relationship does Channing Tatum have with his family?

Although I feel I know a lot about Channing Tatum, I don't personally know him. I think one of the best ways to get to know anyone is to understand what kind of relationship they have with their family. Like if you find a guy that's hates his mom or is really disrespectful to his siblings, you may want to think twice before starting a longterm relationship with them. (Sorry, didn't mean to get all Dr. Phil on you.)

Anyway, from what I can tell , I don't think we need to worry about Channing. In his own words, here are some of the things he has said about his family in interviews...

[Channing talking about his's family's experience while he filmed his 2006 movie She's The Man.]
“I come from a family that doesn’t know much about Hollywood, and who doesn’t have a lot of money...My parents haven’t seen many movies, let alone been on the set of one, until this. The producers and director made them feel so welcomed on the set. And my family really had a really good time, too. They have never experienced anything so exciting. My father even got to sit in the director’s chair.”

"[I have childhood memories] from where my grandmother Nana and my Papa used to live. I loved my Nana and my Papa. They were my roots. Every summer my folks sent me off to the country to stay with them, hoping to keep me out of trouble. And you know grandparents are so real they don't even know how to be fake. They never bother saying what you want to hear, they just say "this is the way it is." I'd get up to something and they would just look at me and shake their heads and say: "Oh Channing ...""

"If it wasn't for my mom, I just would not be here today. Not just the physical part of bringing me into this world, but she got me through everything...She totally saved my life. When you're young, you always think you have it so terrible. But I look back on it all now and I realize how bad I didn't have it. I am who I am because of the way they raised me, and I'm so happy for it. I've really tried to take all the good things from everyone in my life and hold onto them."

Through these interviews, Channing has given us a window into his relationship with his family that I feel shows how strong of a bond he seems to have with them. I am sure it's the hopeless romantic in me, but there is something really endearing about a man who is secure enough to express how much he cares about the people who raised him. All I have to say is that Jenna is one lucky girl. :-)

NEWS FLASH: CTU Exclusive - A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints Movie Release in Italy

I get a lot of emails from readers all around the world asking where and when Channing Tatum's movie A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints will be premiering next. Well thanks to my AGTRYS sources, I am pretty sure that Channing Tatum Unwrapped will be the first to report that after the UK release on March 2, 2007 there will be a premiere in Italy on March 9, 2007.

Inside Channing Tatum's Commercials

In his transition from modeling to the big screen, Channing has done two well-known TV commercials with Pepsi and Mountain Dew. Here's a little bit of information about how he managed to beat out experienced actors for both of his roles.

Channing first auditioned to play a club DJ for a Pepsi commercial called "Scratch". Although Channing had to compete against experienced New York DJ's equipped with their own mixers and records, he was able to win the part by borrowing a record from a competitor, acting like he could scratch, and impressing them with his known dancing skills.

After the Pepsi commercial was released, he was asked to fly out to LA to audition for Mountain Dew. Channing found himself again surrounded by experienced actors and many of them he even knew from TV shows. Having never taken an acting class in his life, he felt a little intimidated, but was able to win over the casting team with his Channing charm and ability to follow direction while saying his famous line "Forgot my Dew.".

After getting the part a day later, he started the seven day shoot which included the task of saying lines while strapped in a car on top of a flatbed truck. As the car flipped upside down, Channing had to pretend that he was driving while pulling the Mountain Dew can out of a guys hand. He caps the sexy performance off by somehow managing to drink the Dew as the car is rotating.

For the daredevil shoot, Channing was taught how to drive fast and do 360s and 180s in the car, but they let the professional stunt man do the most dangerous shots where you had to just miss the camera by a couple of inches.

Four weeks later, the Mountain Dew commercial aired and people started to recognize Channing on the street. Life has never been the same for the actor.

Channing Tatum Pictures of the Week (Kinda-Sorta)

OK. I know what you're probably thinking. You are probably thinking - What is wrong with her? Doesn't she see that this picture of Channing Tatum is blurry?

I personally can't help but smile when I see this picture. In my defense, I know it's not the clearest screen capture you've ever seen. My question to you is do you really NEED the picture to be clear to appreciate this shower scene from Coach Carter? I mean, no offense to Samuel L. Jackson or the annoyingly large towel Channing is wearing, but I see THEM as being more of an issue in this picture than the tiny bit of blurriness that stops us from really seeing Channing in his true glory...Know what I'm sayin? ;-)

A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints DVD Details

Channing Tatum's critically-acclaimed movie A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints grossed a little over a half million dollars at the box office and won the Dramatic Directing Award at Sundance 2006 for Dino Montiel and a Special Jury Award for Best Ensemble Performance special award for Channing and the cast. Because of the limited North American release, many fans are chomping at the bit to see the multiple award-winning performances of Channing Tatum, Robert Downey Jr., Dianne Wiest, Chazz Palminteri, Shia LaBeouf, Eric Roberts, and Rosario Dawson.

Many of us will get to see the movie when it comes out on DVD on February 20, 2007 in the US. Lucky for all of us, it seems they have packed the DVD with lots of cool extras that will have us playing the movie over and over again once we finally do get it. RANT OR RAVE?: Channing Tatum Gets Hosed by the Oscars

Here's the RANT (but stick around cuz the rave comes later)...If you live in the US, I'm sure you've seen that phone commercial where the Dad gets his kids awesome gifts for Christmas and he just gets a tie or something completely mundane in return. Then he tells his kids that he "got hosed".

Well that's kind of what happened to Channing this morning. He gave us the awesome performance in A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints and the Oscars gave him nada, zilch, no love at all. Although there has been positive buzz around his gritty, dramatic performance as Antonio in A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints, his name was not on the list this morning when the Oscar nominations were announced by former Oscar nominee Salma Hayek. Shame on them.

OK now here's the RAVE...Channing may not have won a nomination this year, but don't fret. Anyone who can take themselves from modeling, to commercials, to lead movie roles in just a few years, is a very driven and focused individual. I truly believe he has many more years of strong roles that eventually will get the attention of the Oscar community. Regardless of what the Oscars say, he has won my award for Sexiest Actor of the Century. Who needs an Oscar when you have that, right? :-)

The Oscars will air on February 25, 2007 on ABC and they are hosted this year by the People's Choice winner for Talk-Show Host and Favorite Female Star, Ellen Degeneres.

Oh yea, and keep your fingers crossed for Channing to win his nomination for Best Supporting Male for A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints at the 2007 Independent Spirit Awards on February 24, 2007.

AS SEEN ON TV...Just wanted to let you all know that Channing Tatum's movie (and I say HIS movie loosely, because he's only in it for approximately 2 minutes over the entire course of the movie) 2005's Havoc will be playing on Encore Drama on Friday night January 26, 2007 in the US. Channing Tatum's Girlfriend: Jenna Dewan's Appearance at the Smokin' Aces Premiere

The new Ben Affleck, Ryan Reynolds, and recent Golden Globe nominee, Jeremy Piven movie Smokin' Aces had its world premiere this past weekend in Hollywood at the famous Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.

Just in case you're interested, the movie is about two FBI agents (Ryan Reynolds and Ray Liotta) who must protect an entertainer (Jeremy Piven) from a crew of assassins (including Ben Affleck and Alicia Keys) after he agrees to testify against the Las Vegas mob.

Stars that attended the premiere included Ben Affleck, Ryan Reynolds, Kanye West, Elizabeth Banks, Alicia Keys, Amanda Peet, Chris Pine, Andy Garcia and most importantly, Channing Tatum's adorable girlfriend Jenna Dewan. I am not sure if she attended the event with Channing or not, but the picture is still great!

Channing Tatum and Girlfriend Jenna Dewan: Exclusive First 2007 Sighting of the Couple on ChanningTatum.org

I am so happy to make this post for so many reasons. First of all, the fan site CT.org just posted some NEW personal pictures of Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan with friends Amber and Jen in what my source's say is a local deli and they were there for their friend's birthday celebration. What is even better about the pictures is that they were taken last Saturday!!!!!

Sooooooooo, I am going to go out on a limb and say that I think Channing and Jenna are still together. :-D

CHANNING TATUM FOR DUMMIES: Are Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan still dating?

I am sure that anyone who has seen Step Up remembers the sexy shipyard seen with Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan rehearsing her dream vision of her senior dance performance. It was my favorite seen in the movie and you could swim in the chemistry between characters Tyler and Nora. Click here to see the hot movie clip.

Channing Tatum's relationship status is one of the questions that I definitely get the most often. This week's question is not about the make-believe relationship of Tyler and Nora. It's about the real-life relationship of Channing and Jenna.

The talented couple was been seen together as late as last month, but there have been unconfirmable rumors of a breakup. I really think that they are still together, but the truth of the matter is that only Channing and Jenna know for sure. My hope is that we will be able to see Channing with Jenna soon at the 2007 Independent Spirit Awards, the DVD release party for A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints and/or the European premiere of A Guide to Recognizing your Saints and maybe that will answer the question for us.

Personally, I'm just going to keep my fingers crossed that they ARE still dating, because I think they seem to make a really good couple.

Channing Tatum's Girlfriend: A Day in the Life of Jenna Dewan

I'm a huge So You Think You Can Dance fan (surprise, surprise), so I was really excited to see the episode where Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan visited to promote the movie Step Up. Here is a picture of the gorgeous couple on the set.

Channing Tatum Pictures of the Week

This photo is one of Channing's many Interview Magazine outtakes. I really don't need to say a lot about this photo, because a picture speaks 1000 words. I think this is one of my favorite series of photos that Channing has taken, because they seem so personal and he really connects with the camera and the person looking at the picture. You know how people are always talking about how a person's eyes seem to follow you in pictures, well I swear his lips are following me too. (OK maybe that's just wishful thinking.) :-D

Channing Tatum Unwrapped...The Early Years (Part 1)

There's a great twelve page (yes I said 12 page) Channing Tatum biography on the site ModelLaunch.com that you may not have the time to read, so I thought I would give you some of the highlights broken out over a few blog entries. For all those who want to learn as much as you can about Channing here you go...

Before the Channing Tatum we now know was recklessly retrieving his soda in a Mountain Dew commercial, playing shirtless soccer in She's the Man, or making us swoon with his dance skills in Step Up, the approximately 6'1" Taurus was born Channing Matthew Tatum on April 26, 1980 in a sleepy town outside of Montgomery, Alabama, called Cullman.

In the article, Channing mentions his fond memories of the carefree summers he spent with his grandmother, Nana, and grandfather, Papa, (how cute is that?) in the country where he was always up to something. His family left Alabama when he was six to live in Mississippi where he grew up chasing rattlesnakes and alligators, fishing, playing Pop Warner football, and getting into anything else a boy could do to keep busy in the Mississippi River bayou.

Blessed with athletic ability from an early age, Channing's parents kept him involved in football, soccer, track, baseball, and marshal arts to keep their energetic child out of trouble. The self-professed flirt also says that he was easily distracted by any cute girl he came across in class.

Out of all his many activities, Channing's true love was martial arts. He loved the tournaments, the fighting, the focus, the adrenaline, and the fact that, unlike team sports, "it was completely up to me to be however great I wanted to be".

Even with a full schedule, somehow he still found time to get into a little trouble (surprise, surprise), so his dad shipped him off to private school in the ninth grade where he played football and found what he calls a "really good girl" who had the enviable pleasure of helping him with school and "trying to be good". :-)

Channing Tatum's Fabulous Fans

Here is a fan picture of Channing Tatum and girlfriend Jenna Dewan (and yes I've decided to keep saying girlfriend until I receive undeniable proof they are not dating anymore...call it wishful thinking).

This picture was taken when they made an appearance on the CBS Early Show while they were promoting their movie Step Up last year. Channing Tatum's Girlfriend: Jenna Dewan Is More Than Just a Pretty Face

Although there are rumors that they may have broken up, I really hope that Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan are still dating. Channing has said in interviews that he really admires how loving Jenna is and how she likes to teach and help people. Here is a picture of Jenna Dewan and Mia Tyler (the daughter of Steve Tyler in Aerosmith) that shows her volunteering her time at LA’s Downtown Women's shelter. It may not be the normal glamorous picture you would see in an US Weekly or People Magazine, but she looks beautiful to me and it's an important picture none the less.

I know this may seem kind of random, but I really like the fact she's giving back to the community. Thousands of women call shelters home for many reasons that most of of us are lucky to not have to deal with on a daily basis. I think it's important that stars use their celebrity for good instead of evil and volunteering at shelters like this can shine a light on an issue that may not have gotten any attention.

NEWS FLASH: A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints Movie Release in Europe

Since I have readers all around the world, I want to make sure I keep everyone informed when possible. I just found out that Channing Tatum's movie A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints opens in theatres in the UK and many places in Europe on March 2, 2007. Since it seems that Channing has been in hiding for the past few weeks, I hope this means we can get a fresh batch of new pictures of our favorite actor at the UK premiere. Channing Tatum: Entertainment Weekly's Brightest New Star of 2006

Entertainment Weekly recently declared Channing Tatum one of the brightest new stars in 2006. In case you missed the issue in the magazine, here are some highlights from the article:

Although the article recognized his surprise teen hit Step Up, there is no surprise they gave him this award mostly for his "gritty" performance in the indie film A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. They were impressed by the fact that Channing was able to get Gotham and Independent Spirit award nominations for his role as Antonio, "a headstrong rebel growing up on the streets of 1980s Queens". In the article, Channing talks about how he is attracted to films that move him, which turns out to be the smaller movie projects in many cases.

The article also mentions his highly anticipated upcoming projects. Although I'm not a big war movie fan, I personally look forward to seeing Channing as fellow hottie Ryan Phillippe's best friend in the next drama from director Kimberly Peirce. Although you'll sometimes hear the movie called the "Untitled Kimberly Peirce Project", the working title is actually Stop-Loss and it started filming in Austin, Texas toward the end of August in 2006. The movie produced by Paramount Pictures is currently in post-production and will be released some time later this year. The article also mentions his other dramatic role as a riot cop in the movie Battle in Seattle, which is based on the 1999 World Trade Organization riots in Seattle.

In the article, we learn that Channing used to really hate auditions. He's much more comfortable with it now, because he really just tries to have fun with the process and not take it so seriously.

Channing Tatum's Star is on the Rise

Visited by over 42 million movie lovers each month, the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) is currently the biggest and most award-winning movie site. IMDb's STARmeter rankings provide a snapshot of who's popular based on the searches of millions of IMDb users. Updated weekly, these rankings also graph the popularity of people over time and determine which events affect public awareness of a particluar star.


Here is Channing Tatum's current STARmeter chart showing how his popularity has continued to increase steadily over the past few years:


Internet Movie Database (IMDb) also assigns an overall STARmeter ranking to each star and Channing's ranking is currently 14. The lower the number the better, so it is really awesome that Channing's STARmeter ranking is already doing so well this early in his career. He is currently beating established, A-List actors like Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Orlando Bloom, and Tom Cruise.

It's no surprise to his fans that Channing Tatum's star is on the rise and I am sure we all hope this trend continues for many years to come.

Channing Tatum's Career Takes a Dramatic Turn

Any self-respecting Channing Tatum fan has seen his performances in 2006's She's the Man and the movie Step Up. If you're anything like me, you've probably seen the movies more times than you're willing to admit.

Because of the limited release of the movie that came out right after Step Up, many Channing fans didn't get to see his award-winning performance as Antonio in A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. In the interview we learn that Channing would do almost anything for a friend or for the people that he loves. He also talks about how difficult it was to play Antonio as a person with a heart, when it is so easy for people to see the character as just the neighborhood psychopath.

Everytime I see Channing in interviews, I just can't help but notice how big a of heart he seems to have and how important acting and giving a good performance is to him. In the famous words of Rachael Ray, Channing is just YUMMO!
