Is Channing Tatum the Next Tom Cruise? (Minus the Crazy)

No offense to mega star Tom Cruise, but it's not news that he's been acting a little lot weird for the past few years. Just ask Brooke Shields or Matt Lauer on the Today Show.

Regardless, the man has had a very successful career that started with a little movie called "Risky Business" circa 1983 where he and his tighty-whitety's slide their way into the hearts of women everywhere and the eyes of film executives in Tinseltown. Some of you may be too young to remember that movie, but it launched Tom's career.

The Detroit News posted an article today by Rachel Abramowitz of the Los Angeles Times that asks "Who's the Next Tom Cruise?". And it's not just Tom Cruise they are trying to replace, the article also tries to figure out who can step into the shoes of Hollywood heavy weights like Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio (who at a ripe old age of 32 is a stone's throw from the nursing home in Hollywood standards).

Channing Tatum is one of the prospects on the site's list that also includes newcomers Emile Hirsch ("Lords of Dogtown", "Alpha Dog"), Sam Worthington ("Macbeth"), James McAvoy ("The Last King of Scotland"), and Channing's "A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints" co-star Shia LaBeouf. Ms. Abramowitz says that Hollywood is betting a ton of money on these relative newcomers in the next year.

So why is anyone even looking for the next Tom Cruise? Well, it seems casting directors feel there's been a bit of a drought and that Hollywood is ready for the next generation of leading man. They are saying that (and I could not agree with them more) it is the end of the era of the sensitive young man (ala Orlando Bloom, Josh Hartnett, Jake Gyllenhaal, even Tobey Maguire) and that they are looking to "get back to a more masculine movie star".

Enter stage right...Channing Tatum.

Is Channing Tatum the next Tom Cruise? It's a tall order to fill, but from what I've seen so far, I think this can be classified as a Mission Possible. :-)
