IN THE PRESS: Why Channing Tatum Really Wanted to Play Gambit in Hugh Jackman's 'Wolverine'

Channing Tatum at the 'Stop-Loss' Press Conference at the Four Seasons Hotel on March 16, 2008 in Beverly Hills, California (High Quality - HQ)Last year, a little birdie told me about how excited Channing Tatum was when he won the role of Gambit and how equally disappointed he was when scheduling conflicts stopped him from being able to take on the coveted role in Hugh Jackman's 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine'.

Today, MTV's Splashpage just posted an interview where Chan himself talks about the personal reason why he wanted the role so badly and how he feels about Taylor Kitsch (the actor who was later chosen to play the character)...

‘G.I. Joe’ Star Channing Tatum Mourns Missed Chance At Playing Gambit In ‘Wolverine’ Movie

Published by Silas Lesnick on Thursday, April 16, 2009
Though he’s all over the map this summer with April’s “Fighting,” July’s “Public Enemies” and August’s “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra,” actor Channing Tatum’s biggest regret is missing the chance to play Cajun card player Gambit in May’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine“.

Tatum, a self-professed comic book fan, holds the trench-coated mutant near and dear to his heart. According to Tatum, Gambit has always been his number-one superhero and one to which he feels a personal connection.

“Man, I was dying to play [Gambit],” Tatum told MTV News. “My dad’s from Louisiana and I think I’ve always just gravitated towards Gambit in general. He’s just cooler than anything to me.”

Tatum very nearly got his chance when he was all-but cast as Gambit’s alter ego, Remy LeBeau, in Brett Ratner’s “X-Men: The Last Stand”. The character, however, was dropped at the last minute.

“They didn’t end up putting his character in because he’s such a big character that they were waiting…”

When it was decided that Gambit would make his big-screen debut in “Wolverine” instead, Tatum was immediately contacted about the role, but found that it would be impossible to work out in terms of schedule due to his commitments with “G.I. Joe.” The role ultimately went to Taylor Kitsch instead, a choice that Tatum endorses with just a little bit of jealousy.

“I’m really interested to see how the guy plays him because I have a pretty clear version of Gambit in my head,” Tatum. “I’m sure the guy is going to be great, though.”

Channing Tatum in 'Fighting' (Wallpaper)In case you don't know...In 'Fighting', writer/director Dito Montiel weaves a tale of two men headed straight for failure…until they cross paths and realize each has exactly what the other needs for big success.

Small-town boy Shawn MacArthur (Channing Tatum) has come to New York City with nothing. Barely earning a living selling counterfeit goods on the streets, his luck changes when scam artist Harvey Boarden (Terrence Howard) sees that he has a natural talent for street fighting. When Harvey offers Shawn help at making some real cash, the two form an uneasy partnership.

As Shawn’s manager, Harvey introduces him to the corrupt bare-knuckle circuit, where rich men bet on disposable pawns. Almost overnight, he becomes a star brawler. He learns he must fight his way—in a series of staggeringly intense bouts— through the city and take down local opponents who come at him with a variety of skills. But if Shawn ever hopes to escape the dark world in which he’s found himself, he must now face the toughest fight of his life.

IN THE PRESS: Check Out Channing Tatum in Empire Magazine’s 2009 Hot List

Channing Tatum Featured in Empire Magazine's Hot List - May 2009 Issue (Cover)As I recently posted, Channing Tatum is featured in the May 2009 issue of Empire Magazine (aka "The Hot Issue").

In what's been dubbed "The Hot List", Empire Magazine is letting us know about the people we "can't afford to miss out on in 2009 and who are set to go stratospheric in the 2010's - the stars with the talent, the taste and more often then not the sheer gorgeousness to change cinema over the next few years".

Here's what Empire had to say about why Channing has the credentials to make both this and next year's list:

"...like [Marlon] Brando in 'On the Waterfront': he seems a little confused and a lot angry. He's vital if raw in 'Stop-Loss', muscular (and fearless) in 'Step Up', and brilliant in 'A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints'. He teams with 'Saints' director Dito Montiel again for underground scrap flick 'Fighting', but will receive wider notice for his Pretty Boy Floyd in 'Public Enemies' and the gun 'n' leather fetishism of 'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra'. Lasse Hallstrom's war-vet romance 'Dear John' will prove he has brains as well as brawn. Expect tears, too."

You can also check out the scan of the article from the magazine below:

Channing Tatum Featured in Empire Magazine's Hot List - May 2009 Issue

The Hot List includes two of Chan's co-stars (Marion Cotillard from 2009's 'Pubic Enemies' and Amanda Seyfried from 2010's 'Dear John'). You'll find the complete list of the twenty "young, talented, and really happening right now" upstart stars who Empire says will go supernova:

  • Jim Sturgess

  • Mary Elizabeth Winstead

  • Melanie Laurent

  • Freida Pinto

  • Marion Cotillard

  • Michael Fassbender

  • Mia Wasikowska

  • Gemma Arterton

  • Evan Rachel Wood

  • Emily Blunt

  • Carey Mulligan

  • Zoe Saldana

  • Rebecca Hall

  • Channing Tatum

  • Sam Worthington

  • Ryan Reynolds

  • Daniel Mays

  • Amanda Seyfried

  • Noel Clarke

  • Megan Fox

NEWS FLASH: Premiere Dates and New International Trailer for Channing Tatum's 'Public Enemies'

FIRST LOOK: Channing Tatum in 'Public Enemies' Trailer

After the release of the highly-anticipated first trailer for Channing Tatum's upcoming historical drama 'Public Enemies' last month, it's been kind of quiet, but I now have some premiere news and a new international trailer for you all.

First of all, the premiere for 'Public Enemies' will be held on June 23, 2009 in Los Angeles, California at the Mann Village Theatre Westwood.

For those fans who aren't lucky enough to live in the LA area, the Wisconsin Film Commission will also be holding screenings and parties prior to the release of the film. Although they have not confirmed if the cast or director will be attending, fans will be able watch the film a day early and in style...

JSOnline.com is reporting that 'Public Enemies' will return to the scene of the crime for screenings and parties across Wisconsin on June 30, 2009.

Official 'Public Enemies' PosterThe events, to be held the day before the film opens nationwide, were announced by Scott Robbe, executive director of Film Wisconsin, the group that functions as the state's film commission.

The screening events will have a 1930s theme, and a party will be held at the Milwaukee County Historical Society Museum, 910 N. Old World 3rd St., which was one of the locations for the filming. A screening will follow at Marcus Majestic Cinema, 770 Springdale Road, Brookfield, with proceeds benefiting the museum.

A Madison screening will be held at the Marcus Point Cinema; the location of the Madison party is yet to be determined. In Oshkosh, the party will take place at Wittman Field, which was a location in the filming, and will feature cars and planes used in the film. The film will be shown on two screens at Marcus Oshkosh Cinemas, benefiting the Oshkosh Facade Program for preservation of historic areas in the city, where filming took place.

Film tickets will be $50 for VIP seating and $25 for general seating. Separate party tickets are required, and information on how to obtain tickets will be announced closer to the events. All three events also will benefit Film Wisconsin.

Based on the New York Times Best Selling author Bryan Burrough's true crime book, 'Public Enemies' follows the FBI hunt for 1930's gangster John Dillinger.

The Universal Studios film is directed by Michael Mann and boasts a stunning cast that includes Channing Tatum, Johnny Depp, Marion Cotillard, Christian Bale, Branka Katic, Billy Crudup, Giovanni Ribisi, Emilie de Ravin, John Michael Bolger, Stephen Dorff, Christian Stolte and Leelee Sobieski.

CHANNING TATUM PICTURES OF THE WEEK: Date Nights for Chan and Jenna

Each week Channing Tatum Unwrapped will post one or more of our favorite pics of Channing Tatum. Today's Pictures of the Week are some cute new photos of Chan and his beautiful fiancee Jenna Dewan (aka our favorite couple Chenna) after they catch a late-night movie at Sunset 5 Theatres in Los Angeles on Monday night (April 6). You can CLICK HERE to see all of the photos or you can check them out in the slideshow below. Enjoy!!!

According to Instyle Magazine, last week's date night was a little less low key. Sadly, we don't have any pictures, but Instyle reported that Chan and Jenna attended Gucci's launch of their new Flora by Gucci fragrance with an intimate dinner for the next generation of style stars at West Hollywood's Bar Marmont.

The party (which as held on March 31st) was co-hosted by Chan's 'Dear John' co-star Amanda Seyfried and Vanessa Hudgens, and attendees like Dominic Cooper, Alexa Vega, Megan Fox, Rumer Willis, and Micah Alberti dined on a three-course meal in the courtyard of the historic Chateau Marmont hotel. Here's what Chan had to say to Instyle about the event...

"It’s a pleasure when someone’s going to dress you and then also feed you...It doesn’t really get any better than that."

If you have a favorite picture from this blog, our photo gallery, a picture you have made or a picture that you have found on the net that you would like me to consider, send the picture or a link to the picture to potw@channingtatumunwrapped.com and tell me why you like it. I will post it and your explanation on the blog. If you like or don't like today's picture (for some completely insane reason), let everyone know that too by clicking on the comments link below. :-)

CHANNING TATUM FOR DUMMIES...The 'Fighting' Edition

As I previously posted, I was able to attend the Los Angeles press junket for Channing Tatum's new movie 'Fighting' last Saturday. The event was held at the beautiful Four Seasons Los Angeles hotel, which I quickly learned is a hot bed for celebs far and wide.

In addition to the 'Fighting' junket that included stars like Channing Tatum, Terrence Howard and Zulay Henao, the hotel also hosted a junket for the upcoming film '17 Again', so stars like Zac Efron (with his girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens) and Matthew Perry were roaming around the hotel. And it didn't stop there. I even ran into Death Row Records co-founder Suge Night and Extra reporter Terri Seymour by the time I checked out on Sunday.

I was only at the Four Seasons for a little over 24 hours, so if seeing stars is your thing, I recommend you just sit in their lobby, and you might just spot a few yourself. Just don't tell them I sent you. ;-)

Anyway...I live-blogged from the junket via Chan's official Twitter, but in case you missed it, you'll find a recap of my tweets below with some additional information that I learned during my trip via today's 'Fighting'-inspired Channing Tatum for Dummies. Enjoy!!!

Channing Tatum for Dummies is a series of articles where I try to answer the most frequently asked questions about Channing Tatum that I receive from readers or find on message boards all over the internet.

Today the questions come from fans and the 'Fighting' press junket interviewers from around the world, and we can thank Channing Tatum for providing the majority of the answers:

Question:

How did Channing prepare for his fight scenes in the film?

Chan's Answer:

Many of the interviewers commented on how amazing and realistic the fight scenes were in the film. Channing prepared for his roll as street brawler Shawn MacArthur for approximately two and a half hours a day with trainer Jeremy Williams at Legends MMA Gym in Los Angeles for 5 weeks before filming began. Masterminding the choreography of the fight sequences were veteran stunt coordinator Mic Rodgers ('Fast & Furious', 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith', the 'Lethal Weapon' franchise) and fight coordinator Mike Gunther ('Underworld', 'Live Free or Die Hard', 'Fast & Furious'). The trainers taught Chan routines that involved techniques from boxing and Greco-Roman wrestling to Ultimate Fighting and mixed martial arts.

Question:

Did Channing use any doubles in 'Fighting' or is it actually him in all of the fights?

Chan's Answer:

For the record, this film is 100% Channing Tatum in all four of the fights. It was extremely important to Channing that every frame be as realistic as possible. Chan said that three of the fight scenes were each shot in approximately one 14-hour day. The finale fight scene with Brian White really took a toll on him, because it took three 14-hour days to shoot.

In one of the fights, Chan's nose was accidentally hit by one of the fighter's punches. Being the trouper that he is, the trainer somehow straightened out the nose that we've all grown to know and love with a set of spoons and Chan managed to complete filming the scene. Dedication at it's best.

Question:

What was it like working with director Dito Montiel for the second time?

Chan's Answer:

The initial script for 'Fighting' started out as a basketball-themed film. Chan suggested they consider a storyline about street fighting in which he could use his raw physicality. He enjoyed working with Dito Montiel so much in 'A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints' that he also suggested to the producers that they have the writer/director rework the script. Using inspiration from his childhood, Montiel considered the suggestion and crafted a story that explored the world of underground fighting.

Of working on the film with Montiel, Chan says: “Dito and I wanted to make a film about lonely people…about two guys who find each other and common ground—even though they represent two different ends of the spectrum. They both have something they need from each other.” The troubled, sensitive and good-natured Shawn is a character far removed from Saints’ violent, streetwise Antonio, but Chan was eager to challenge himself as a performer.

He and Dito created a detailed backstory for the character who has fled his roots in Birmingham, Alabama, in order to try his luck in the city. “Shawn’s dad was a tough college wrestling coach,” Chan explains. “Since he was a very athletic guy, he expected his son to be athletic, too…so Shawn wrestled. A lot of parents want to live through their kids and want them to do better than they did. That was a real source of friction for him and his father.”

Question:

What was it like to work with Terrence Howard?

Chan's Answer:

Chan, Terrence, and the other actors were constantly joking around on set to pass the time in between scenes and that camaraderie continued at the press junket. During one of Channing's interviews, Terrence busted in to joke around with Chan, and later in the day when Terrence was being interviewed by the same media outlet, Chan reciprocated. Chan said that he really enjoyed working with Terrence and learned a lot from him during the shoot.

Question:

What are some of Channing's favorite films?

Chan's Answer:

Way before he ever caught the acting bug, a very young Channing Tatum fell in love with film after he saw movies like Paul Newman's 'Cool Hand Luke' and 'The Hustler' with his dad. Fast forward to today and he'll also tell you that he's a fan of action dramas like Denzel Washington's 'Man on Fire'.

Question:

Where does Channing see his career in the next ten or fifteen years?

Chan's Answer:

When asked about the future of his career, Channing told interviewers that he would really like to get on the other side of the camera as a writer and producer in the next ten years and maybe as a director in the next 15 years. Although the nature of the beast dictates that he can't give a lot of details, he mentioned that he is currently working on various writing and producing projects in addition to his current acting gigs.

He also confirmed that he is still considering a role in the Roman drama 'The Eagle of the Ninth', that he’s no longer in the running for the lead role of Thor in Marvel’s 2011 big-screen adaptation (although he did meet with the director), and that he really wanted to play Snakes Eyes in 'G.I. Joe'. Chan thinks that Snake Eyes is the coolest of the Joes, solely because he never says word.

Question:

Does Chan read Channing Tatum Unwrapped?

Chan's Answer:

In between reading tons of scripts and books to prepare for his potential and confirmed roles, Channing does take the time to read CTU. So feel free to keep leaving comments, and it could be one that he gets a chance to read when he visits the site.

Question:

Is Channing Tatum in 'War of the Worlds'?

Chan's Answer:

This may seem random, but since I got the answer this past weekend at the junket, I wanted to go ahead and post this. You all may be very surprised by the answer to this one. The truth is Channing Tatum was NOT in 'War of the Worlds' at all. Although IMDB says differently and many people thought that he was in the church scene or in a deleted scene, Chan's mom confirmed this fact with him and he said was not in the film at all. And now you know!!!

Question:

Does Channing have a pet?

Chan's Answer:

Chan told me that he adopted a new puppy right before Christmas. Her name is Lulu, and she's a mut that is mixed with four different breeds. He saved a 7 week old Lulu from a dog shelter in Alabama when he was back home visiting relatives after the filming wrapped on 'Dear John'. Chan loved working with the American Bulldogs they had on the set of 'Fighting' and had been wanting to get an animal for a long time, so I was glad to hear he not only found one, but saved one from an uncertain fate at a shelter.

Question:

Did Channing sign any autographed 'Fighting' posters for his fans?

Chan's Answer:

He sure did!!! If you were following my live blog of the event, then you know I had a contest for our followers on Twitter where I gave away autographed posters to some of the fans who responded to my tweet. The following Channing Tatum fans have won an autographed Fighting poster: @rbergeson79 @spaceygirlSA @missmelanie1980 @jaybran @rachel9133 and have been alerted via Twitter.

Thanks to everyone who followed my first live-blogging event on Twitter! I hope to do it again for the premiere on April 20th. Also, I may just have a few more autographed 'Fighting' posters to give away soon, so everyone stay tuned!!!

VIDEOS OF THE WEEK: New Featurette and Five New Movie Clips for Channing Tatum's 'Fighting'

'Fighting' Wallpaper (Channing Tatum)

To say I had an exciting day yesterday would be a bit of an understatement. By the end of the day, I not only live-blogged my first official press event via Channing Tatum's Twitter, I had also personally seen and/or talked to no less than 6 celebs and had another awesome dinner with Chan's mom in a matter of a few hours. I guess that's Hollywood for you.

Needless to say, I had an incredible day yesterday hanging out with Channing Tatum at the 'Fighting' press junket and am in the process of collecting all of my notes into an article to summarize my eventful day. I learned some really awesome news from Chan and his publicist that I can't wait to share with you all, and I will post it some time tomorrow, so stay tuned. In the meantime, you can CLICK HERE to check out one of the exclusive pics I took of Chan and posted on Twitter yesterday from the junket.

During my dinner with Chan's mom, she told me about a new Collider.com article that had more footage from the film. Below, you can watch a new 'Fighting' featurette that features interviews with Channing Tatum and his co-star Terrence Howard and 5 awesome new clips from Chan's upcoming action/romantic drama. Enjoy!!!

The movie hits theaters April 24, 2009 and you can CLICK HERE to get a current list of release dates around the world.

Fans can also watch the trailer and other videos from the production on our Youtube Channel, check out tons of behind-the-scenes and promotional photos in the 'Fighting' Photo Set in the Channing Tatum Unwrapped Photo Gallery, and get even more info about the movie on the film's newly redesigned official site at http://www.fightingmovie.net.
