NEWS FLASH: Channing Tatum’s ‘Eagle of the Ninth’ Starts Filming in Hungary
As I previously mentioned, Channing Tatum left for Hungary on August 9th to prepare for his upcoming film, 'The Eagle of the Ninth', after wrapping up the 'G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra' press tour. I even had a surprised Hungarian fan send me an email to let me know she may have spotted Chan running (his favorite exercise routine) on a bridge in Budapest. I don't know if it was actually him on that bridge or not, but I can confirm that filming began yesterday for the Roman epic that has been called a "'Braveheart' for a new generation".
There's a lot of fire power behind this movie...The film is directed by Academy Award winner Kevin Macdonald and produced by Academy Award and Golden Globe Award nominee Duncan Kenworthy ('Four Weddings and a Funeral). In addition to Chan, 'The Eagle of the Ninth' will also star Jamie Bell ('Defiance', 'Jumper'), two-time Golden Globe Award winner Donald Sutherland, and Mark Strong (the upcoming 'Sherlock Holmes' and 'Robin Hood').
The screenplay was adapted by screenwriter Jeremy Brock (who previously worked with MacDonald on the award-winning 'The Last King Of Scotland'). Anthony Dod Mantle, who won the Academy Award earlier this year for his cinematography of 'Slumdog Millionaire', is director of photography, and 2009 Academy Award winner Michael O'Connor and Academy Award nominee Michael Carlin (both of 'The Duchess') are the film's costume and production designers, respectively.
'The Eagle of the Ninth' is based on the best-selling, classic 1954 teen novel by Rosemary Sutcliff, and is set in the dangerous world of second-century Britain.
In 140 AD, twenty years after the unexplained disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland, young centurion Marcus Aquila (played by Channing) arrives from Rome to solve the mystery and restore the reputation of his father, the commander of the Ninth.
Accompanied only by his British slave Esca (Jamie Bell), Marcus sets out across Hadrian's Wall into the uncharted highlands of Caledonia - to confront its savage tribes, make peace with his father's memory, and retrieve the lost legion's golden emblem, the Eagle of the Ninth. Donald Sutherland portrays Marcus' uncle Aquila, who has retired in Britain; Mark Strong is cast as Guern, an ex-soldier who holds crucial information about the Ninth.
The film sold exceptionally well at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival by acquiring distributors in every major territory around the world, and the production will be shooting entirely on location in Hungary and Scotland for approximately 3 months.
'The Eagle of the Ninth' is scheduled to hit theaters some time in 2010!!!
